Designing for Equity in Medical Education: An Innovative Application of Design Thinking to Co-Create Equitable Assessment Systems
Medical education assessment tools are crucial for grading and feedback but often display bias against marginalized groups. The root of this bias is prejudiced assessment procedures, causing unequal opportunities for underrepresented students. To address this, the initiative aims to develop fairer assessment methods using a stakeholder-driven approach. Central to this plan is the implementation of Design Thinking (DT), a collaborative method used to tailor solutions to local needs, enhanced by the principles of Design Justice. Design Justice focuses on countering systemic imbalances by actively involving affected stakeholders in co-creating solutions. While DT has previously been applied in medical curriculum development, its use in assessment, combined with Design Justice (proven effective in tech, healthcare, and education), is the initiative's unique approach.
