Effectiveness of Facebook as a method for recruiting Latino elders for research

Social media use is rising among older adults, and Facebook is currently the most used social media site for both older adults and Spanish-speakers in the United States. To date, there have been no studies published on the use of Facebook to recruit older adult Latinos for scientific research. In this study, Facebook advertising was used to promote a research study on health and exercise to older Latino users in the Philadelphia area. A Facebook page was also made in order to create a presence on the site and gather more attention from the community. The advertisements ran for nine days with a daily budget of $10. During this time, 2,952 unique viewers saw one of the two advertisements run, 128 individuals engaged with the advertisements in some way, 78 clicked on an advertisement, and 24 completed an attached survey asking for the respondents name and phone number (in order to contact the participant about participating in the research study). The cost-per-response of this campaign was approximately $3.98. Additionally, 7 more individuals reached out via the Facebook messenger function or in the comment section of the advertisements or Facebook posts to express their interest in the study. One limitation of this study is that it is unclear at this point if every person who responded to an advertisement will end up participating in the much longer research study; however, these results are promising for several reasons. Firstly, individuals within the community were receptive to the study’s mission, as evidenced by the amount of engagement and positive comments the advertisements and Facebook page received. Whether these Facebook users are able to participate in the study, it is significant that they are open to and supportive of this intervention program. Secondly, we were able to reach a very high number of unique viewers each day, with a consistent amount of engagement, for a low price relative to the results of other studies that attempted to recruit participants through Facebook. The high response rate of this study could be due to the specific audience we targeted. These early results indicate that Facebook is a viable and cost-effective way to reach a large number of people from a target demographic and create an online presence in a community; whether the advertising campaign will lead to a significant number of participants in the long-term research study is unclear at this point, but the number of responses and positive feedback suggests that several new participants will join the study as a direct result of seeing the advertisement on Facebook.
