Immunohistochemical Characterization of the Human Olfactory System
The purpose of this project was to identify olfactory sensory neurons in neurotypical and neurodegenerative epitheliums in order to better explain the pathway between olfaction and brain function. The current hypothesis is that olfaction, specifically the use of olfactory sensory neurons in the epithelium, is a possible entryway for particles that could cause neurodegeneration, specifically, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. In explaining this particular pathway, we advance research further towards possible interventions and aid for these patients. The main techniques used included immunostaining, and the sectioning of tissue.
