Impacts of Social Constraints on the Use of African American English

Over the course of the PURM summer program, I worked with Dr. Nicole Holliday on a sociolinguistic project. Looking at the 1966 Bengt Loman Tapes I auditorily coded for three tapes, particularly coding for features of African American English. Looking at non-rhoticity, th-stopping, and alveolar vs velar nasal, the data from this presentation illustrates the ways in which social constraints impact a speaker's use of African American English. The data in this presentation highlights the connection between linguistics and social constraints, depicting how children interact with features of African American English based on social constraints.
