From Marginalization to Empowerment: the Perceived Effects of Viewing Sexually Explicit Material on Queer Asian American Men’s Well-Being

In the United States, LGBTQ+ Asian American (AA) individuals report poorer well-being than their cisgender, heterosexual white counterparts. This study examines their physical, mental, and sexual well-being, focusing on sexual violence prevention, sexually transmitted infection management, and sexual function and desire. Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectionality theory and Ilan Meyer's Minority Stress Theory suggest that stressors experienced by dual identifying as LGBTQ+ and AA decrease well-being and create new avenues for harm. The lack of inclusivity, specifically racism and harmful stereotypes, within non-heterosexual sexually explicit material (SEM) that includes AA performers could act as a proximal or distal stressor.

Through 18 interviews, the study collected qualitative data from AA non-heterosexual cisgender men aged 18-24 who have viewed SEM featuring non-heterosexual AA performers. The study aimed to assess the impact of inclusivity within non-heterosexual AA SEM on physical, mental, and sexual well-being, gather suggestions for enhancing inclusivity, and suggest recommendations to health professionals and members of the LGBTQ+ AA community to improve well-being.

Participants described the harmful stereotypes and narratives of non-heterosexual AA men perpetrated by SEM negatively impacting viewers' mental, physical, and sexual well-being. On the other hand, the overall racial, ethnic, and cultural representation with SEM improved mental and sexual well-being. The study underscores the need for increased research and outreach to provide queer-inclusive comprehensive sexual health information with information on how to safely view SEM and debunk misconceptions associated with non-heterosexual AA SEM. The findings prompt the SEM industry to create more inclusive content.
