Netflix in Mexico: A 10-Year Assessment

In 2017, Dr. Juan Llamas-Rodriguez contributed to the Global Internet TV Consortium by analyzing the media and entertainment industry in Mexico, focusing on Netflix as a quickly emerging SVOD (Subscription Video On Demand) service and its market revenue, adoption in the country, competitors, content, and estimated subscribers count. His current project aims to update this information with up-to-date data and examine the changes that have occurred since his last research. It also seeks to identify the reasons for the rapid growth of streaming services in Mexico, the types of narratives viewers are interested in, and whether those are reflected in the original titles of Netflix. A significant question is whether the actual content recycles old, well-known viewers' narratives or tries to establish new story models.

The methodology used for the execution of the project included the evaluation of press coverage from sources such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Los Angeles Times, the distribution of various articles into different categories (market and content), compiling a list of Netflix original series and films in Mexico and analyzing data to determine the current state of the market in Mexico as well as the estimated number of subscribers there.

The project was mainly divided between the study of content and the market; therefore, two significant outcomes came out of it. Firstly, we identified a trend in the renewal status of television series in Mexico. The conclusion is that shows are expected not to get renewed for additional seasons. In the spreadsheet with original titles compiled as part of the research process, there are 80 different types of media (TV shows, films, docu-series), of which 28 are television shows. Of those 28 shows, only 12 were renewed for a second season, and only five were renewed for a third season. On the market development side, we found that in 2020, Mexico was estimated to have 14.91 million subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) subscribers. That number has almost doubled since 2017, which indicates a quickly rising interest in streaming services in the country. Furthermore, this number is expected to continue to increase in the next couple of years, with about 2-3 million subscribers per year until it reaches an estimated 27.82 million SVoD subscribers in 2025. When it comes to Netflix in particular, the streaming company is estimated to have about 10 million Netflix subscribers in Mexico currently.

The importance of this research lies in its study and evaluation of the socio-cultural significance of Netflix original series in Mexico and its analysis of the economics of media production and distribution in the country, which sets the stage for potential further, more detailed insight into these topics and international media in general.
