New Route, New Faces?: Measuring Changes in the Exposure to Diversity on Transit Using Social Interaction Potential

This project’s goal was to quantify changes in an individual rider’s exposure to diversity in their everyday commute with the addition of new transportation developments. Utilizing survey data on SEPTA’s new bus service, Route 49, this project mapped each individual’s transport route and compared overlays of their route to other passengers’ routes, calculating a summative metric of each rider’s varying exposure to age-based and income-based diversity. Then, by comparing each rider’s SIP value for an origin-to-destination route before and after the implementation of Route 49, the change in an individual’s SIP metric was determined.

I find your research especially interesting since it is very relevant today. Could you further motivate the significance of your research and perhaps how you can use these findings to change the levels of diversity present in public transportation?
