"Pride is here!!! Want a FREE month of Coaching?": Health-Focused LGBTQ+ Influencers' Rhetorical and Authenticity Strategies

LGBTQ+ youth face unique stressors that put them at an increased risk for nicotine use and addiction. Additionally, many LGBTQ+ youth frequently use social media, and they are more likely to engage with influencers from similar identity backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to identify rhetorical and authenticity strategies are being used by health-focused LGBTQ+ influencers to develop an understanding of how best to disseminate health information to this audience. In this study, the researcher utilized an abductive qualitative coding approach, coding social media posts from 6 health-focused LGBTQ+ influencers for rhetorical appeals, authenticity strategies, and health communication tactics. Four overarching themes were identified across the influencers: Words of Affirmation, Fairytale Authenticity, The Hero's Journey, and The Routine. Understanding this content can help better understand what drives engagement from the target audience of young LGBTQ+ people.
