Stroke Health Care Assessment in Nigeria

In Nigeria, a nation where the prevalence of stroke is alarmingly high, many individuals have personal connections to someone who has suffered from a stroke. However, the extent of public understanding about the severity of this condition remains unclear. Our research project, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Renyu Liu from the Perelman School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and Dr. John Grothusen, aimed to address these gaps in awareness and knowledge. Our overarching mission was to reduce the incidence and impact of stroke in Nigeria through a comprehensive approach. The goals of this research were to: assess the baseline levels of stroke awareness and knowledge of the national emergency number in Nigeria. raise awareness about recognizing the symptoms of a stroke and the critical importance of seeking immediate medical help and finally comprehend the experiences of stroke survivors and post-stroke care in Nigeria, taking into account the unique cultural context to ensure our initiatives resonated with the local population. By collaborating with Dr. Renyu Liu and Dr. John Grothusen, we aspire to make a lasting impact on stroke care and awareness, fostering a healthier and more informed Nigerian society.
