Surface-based TEE-CT image registration for bicuspid aortic valve repair

Bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) are the most common congenital cardiovascular defect. BAV repair is preferable in young patients to valve replacement, however it relies heavily on taking critical measurements manually during intraoperative heart inspection. Thus, there exists an increased need to understand BAV pathoanatomical mechanisms to improve surgical outcomes. Routine Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) provides continuous visualization of heart valve motion but lacks detailed anatomical cardiac structure. Conversely, Computed Tomography (CT) generates high resolution cross-sectional images of aortic valve (AV) morphology. With TEE and CT images unaligned in space during acquisition, we sought to perform TEE-CT image registration to overlay the images and allow for dynamic assessment of the BAV disease over time, while also effectively bridging the knowledge gap in anatomical structure.
