Synchronous Pakistan Flooding and China Heatwave Linked to Planetary Wave Resonance
My research focuses on the planetary wave resonance and its linkage to flooding events in the Northern Hemisphere. The jet stream has played a significant role in recent devastating summer weather events. Under the right conditions, the jet stream stalls and becomes stagnant which perpetuates extreme weather events. The correlation between the planetary wave resonance and heatwaves has been proven but there isn't sufficient literature that supports the hypothesis that it's correlated to flooding events as well. The goal was to delve deeper into the subject because it remains relatively understudied. This project aimed to understand why floods in Pakistan have been so abnormal these past years and find a correlationĀ between the simultaneous occurrence of the heatwave in China and the flooding in Pakistan in the summer of 2022. I used weather station data to perform a statistical analysis on the daily precipitation and temperature in both Pakistan and China for the summers of 2018 and 2022. Additionally, I plotted these figures and QRA events in graphs to determine whether the maximum daily precipitation occurred during a QRA event.
