Underwater Art: Restoring Coral Reefs
Eco-tourism can be a very controversial topic. While it helps the local economy by bringing tourists to the area to spend money and support businesses, at the same time, it also places the environmental attraction they are visiting at risk. For example, people going to visit coral reefs are supporting local dive shops, but also damaging the reef even further with emissions from the boat and irresponsible diving practices that physically harm coral. The eco-tourism topic this paper will focus on specifically are the coral reef statues from Jason Decaires Taylor. These statues are made out of a certain substrate that encourages the growth of coral reefs, therefore encouraging the growth of a new ecosystem based around them and increasing biodiversity. The statues are also art pieces though, as Taylor chooses meaningful subject matter to model them from. Through news articles, data on tourists and the local economy, and data on wildlife/biodiversity in the area, this paper will explore whether the benefits these restorative statues bring outweigh the good.
