User Experience (UX) Design as an Inclusion Practice in Discord Communities

Online communities, particularly platforms like Discord, serve as vital hubs for marginalized individuals seeking connection, support, and advocacy. This project explores how practices in User Experience (UX) and Universal Design (UD) within Discord communities impact marginalized users. Focusing on community norms, roles, fonts, emojis/emoticons, and channel structures, the research investigates their influence on user interactions and accessibility. Utilizing a dual-method approach, including observational analysis of the Write4Change server and a digital walkthrough trial with five members, the project examines how these design elements shape user experience and behavior. Rules, role options, stylization features, and channel organization can either facilitate or impede participation based on users’ race, gender identity, and disability status.
