Why are dating apps more widely used than friendship apps?

I investigated why friendship app usage is significantly lower than dating app usage. Because Millenials and Gen Zers are the loneliest generations and friendship buffers against the negative impacts of loneliness, I recruited 299 American adults ages 18-39 years old using Prolific and 195 undergraduates using SONA. I administered a survey containing original quantitative and qualitative measures, as well as validated scales measuring loneliness, depression, and satisfaction with life. I concluded that the reason that dating apps are much more widely used than friendship apps is that friendship apps are more stigmatized and less well-known than dating apps. Further research should investigate why friendship apps are significantly more stigmatized than dating apps. Additionally, future studies should analyze why and how dating apps became de-stigmatized to determine whether friendship apps will be able to undergo a similar process.
