An Evaluation of Contemporary Human Rights Violations: With a Focus on Mitigating the Suppression of Uyghur Muslims

The integral purpose of our project, “An Evaluation of Contemporary Human Rights Violations: With a Focus on Mitigating the Suppression of Uyghur Muslims” was to affirm global human rights issues that are often spoken about through social activism, but not taken an action towards. China’s Repression of Uyghur Muslims in East Turkestan is one of such unfortunate issues where millions of individuals and families are being forced and tortured to eradicate their beliefs, actions, and cultures in the name of “vocational training.” To this end, our student organization, Awareness Against Current Transgressions (AACT), collaborated with internationally recognized organizations, Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) and Nuzugum Women’s Association based in Turkey, to provide care packages to the victims of these atrocities. Along with our dedication to this cause, we saw it fit to create an online program, “One Voice, One Cause,” that aimed to educate high school students on varying human rights violations while instilling a desire to create change by guiding participants on their human rights project of choice. In addition to inviting a myriad of renowned activists and Penn professors such as Rushan Abbas, Olivia Enos, and Dr. Ali Dinar to cultivate student advocacy, we partnered with Penn Admissions and Penn Career Services to teach students about the admission process and networking opportunities at the high school level -- with the hope of magnifying social impact in the future.

This is really cool! How did you actually identify, reach out to, and engage with the students? I'm curious about how you were able to do that in such a tense political space.

Thank you so much for putting together this presentation! I've been aware of the ongoing human rights violation in China specifically in the context of treatment of Uyghur Muslims, but have heard a lot of conflicting information on the evolving situation. I guess I'm just wondering in an age of misinformation, how can we get better information about what's going on that both honors the people being suppressed and disentangles the Western lens from the perspective?

Hi Arsam,

What a great poster. I was wondering if you had further information on how to get involved and what one could do now that we are back on campus. Also, are you currently trying to expand to another demographic facing humanitarian problems?
