A central feature of human group behavior is the establishment of hierarchies and the emergence of leaders. Leader emergence occurs when an individual is given a higher status by group members, rather than being assigned as leader. Many approaches and models of leadership emergence focus on communication style and competence. Social interactions depend on a diverse range of social cues, which may impact communication style and effectiveness. Computational approaches can quantify communication, such as facial expressions and speech dynamics. It is necessary to control an experiment and to also generalize the conditions to real life. Zoom can address these challenges by recording audio and video of social interactions without too much hindrance from technical difficulties. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, teleconferencing has become a popular platform for personal and professional interactions. This talk will discuss my Zoom experiment's results that point to what makes an emergent leader.
