Community Health Needs Assessment in Cobbs Creek

In order to conduct a remote community health needs assessment (CHNA) in Cobbs Creek, Philadelphia, we are conducting a sequential mixed-methods investigation highlighting health services and assets along with barriers to care in the community. A CHNA is an investigation of a community’s current healthcare needs and assets in order to inform implementation and future services. This study is being conducted in partnership with the Dr. Bernett L. Johnson, Jr. Sayre Health Center (SHC), a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) encompassing the Cobbs Creek neighborhood. To remain an FQHC, a CHNA that informs the continuous quality improvement and implementation of healthcare services must be conducted every three years. Cobbs Creek is designated as a Medically Underserved Area by the United States Health Resources and Services Administration. In Sayre’s previous 2017 CHNA, it was found that 23.7% of the service area’s adults exhibit fair or poor health compared to 17.1% of the broader Pennsylvania population. Additionally, 35.0% of Sayre’s service area population was below 100% of the federal poverty line compared to 13.5% of Pennsylvania. The higher incidence of health issues and lower socioeconomic status of Sayre’s service area further warrant continual investigation into the needs experienced by this community. In order to focus on prioritizing community voices and experiences, we are first conducting semi-structured telephone interviews which will later inform a wide-scale survey. Students work remotely with community liaisons at SHC in order to inform protocol, maintain cultural competency, and perform effective participant recruitment. In adapting to the virtual nature of the CHNA, the research team has been flexible, collaborative, innovative, and will continue to embody these traits as the investigation moves from recruitment to interviewing.
